AB Workshops

We welcome back Mike Hall, saxophonist and educator, for an amazing two day Big Band Workshop. Mike has played with amongst others the the Michael Garrick Big Band, Pete Long’s Echoes of Ellington, and Andy Scott’s Group S.

Mike also spent 20 years running the prestigious RNCM Big Band, which involved many great artists such as Bob Mintzer, John Dankworth and Colin Towns.

Mike has been to AB Workshops before running improvisation courses; however this time he brings his wealth of knowledge to playing in a Big Band, and of course if jazz improvisation is your thing we’re going to be doing that too! Mike has a broad and impressive history of playing in and directing big bands and large jazz ensembles over many many years.

Over the weekend Mike will impart his knowledge and experience and passion into a memorable weekend event. We will be work on a number of big band charts covering a delightful variety of styles; something for everyone.

As a band, we’ll get down to discussing the details of tone, phrasing, articulation, dynamics and vibrato and how these can vary with the style and era of the music. Mike will also be giving help and advice on how to solo for those of you willing to give it a go!

Music will be sent out in advance, so you’ll have time to practice and become familiar with the music.
